The i3 REx is rated at aprox 72 miles range on electric power alone (plenty for most daily city commutes); and with the extender running, the range roughly doubles to about 150 miles of range. The 34-hp, 0.6-liter two-cylinder engine spins to life only when the lithium-ion battery runs very low.
The range extender is a two-cylinder gasoline engine that fires up when the battery pack's charge drops below 5 percent to generate enough electricity to keep the i3 rolling. Charging the car with a 240-volt outlet takes up to 4 hours.
